High-voltage DC circuit breakers are specialized switching devices designed for the rapid and safe disconnection of high-voltage DC networks. They are used in HVDC transmission systems, industrial power complexes, traction substations, solar and storage stations, as well as in next-generation DC networks (MVDC/HVDC).
Unlike AC circuit breakers, HVDC circuit breakers must extinguish the arc without a natural zero-crossing of the current; therefore, they employ complex hybrid or mechanical technologies: ultra-fast contacts, power electronic switches, and magnetic arc-extinguishing systems.
Applications of High-Voltage DC Circuit Breakers
Protection of HVDC lines and substations against fault conditions.
Rapid disconnection of high DC currents.
Segmentation and isolation of grid sections in the event of faults.
Operation in long-distance power transmission systems (HVDC).
Use in traction substations, solar power plants, and ESS systems.
Integration into hybrid AC/DC power complexes.
Minimum and maximum technical specifications (general ranges)
Voltage class: from 600 V DC to 1,500 V DC (modular), up to 320–500+ kV DC (industrial HVDC)
Breaking current: from 20–125 A (modular), up to 10–30 kA (HVDC)
Types:
mechanical high-voltage DC circuit breakers;
hybrid (mechanical + power electronics);
solid-state;
modular DC circuit breakers for PV/ESS;
Tripping time: from milliseconds to tens of milliseconds
Installation: outdoor, indoor, in DC distribution cabinets, at substations
